Bill Treble (Wintaka) & Ken Sired (KSired) General Approach--SAYC, 1S opening usually 5+ cards, 1H often is 4-card suit. Strong Opening Bid--2C. 2D waiting, at least an ace. 2H response artificial negative 0-5 points (any hand that would not respond to a one-bid). 2NT=heart positive. Natural positive responses guarantee suit quality of at least KJ9xx. 1NT opening 15-17. Fourth suit transfer responses. 3C by responder shows both minors (4-4, 5-4 or 6-4) and slam interest. 3D shows 5-4ish in minors and 10-13 HCP with shortness in a major. 3H/3S natural slam tries. Regualar Stayman, Smolen used only at three-level. Modified Lebensohl (if overcall is in major, 2NT=pick a minor or diamonds weak, 3C is to play and 3D invitational or better in other major). 4D response is 5-5ish in majors, no slam interest. Over a major-suit transfer a new suit by opener is maximum with 3 or 4 card fit and source of tricks in the bid suit. 2NT opening 20-21. Regular Stayman. 3D/3H transfers. Here a new suit by opener is max but with quick losers, jump to game in responder's suit guarantees control in all side suits. 3S response is minor-suit Stayman, 4C Gerber, 4D 5-5 majors, 4H/4S if we remember is slam try in corresponding minor (4NT by opener is only signoff, 5C/5D would be Keycard) 3NT opening--to play. Somewhat gambling in nature but no particular restrictions on outside values. Jump Shifts by responder--2-level is strong and natural 3-level (e.g. 1S-3C) is natural, 6-card or longer suit. 9-11 HCP Majors--spades usually 5+, hearts 4 or more. 1NT response is non-forcing, 2/1 is 10+ HCP, our side can stop short of game if responder bids 2NT or preferences one of opener's majors as cheaply as possible on his next turn. 2NT response is raise in opener's major, either 10-11 HCP (or 12 with 4333 shape) OR 16+ (with the better hand responder's next bid is 3NT if available). Jump raise in major is 4-card support, balanced hand, 12-15 HCP. Splinters, etc. 2C response is Reverse Drury over 3rd/4th seat opener. Minors--Natural, 1D virtually always a four-card suit. Inverted raises show 10+ HCP (sometimes a 9-count that we're smitten with). Jump raise pre-emptive. Inverted is OFF over any interference. 2D/2H/2S--weak two-bids, random by Kenny, fairly disciplined by Bill if in first or second seat. 2NT asks feature, 3C is tentatively Ogust but we could decide to use it as a short suit ask instead. 3-level pre-empts--undiscussed so far, but style is generally destructive so assume lightish in nature. Overcalls--8+ HCP, often a four-card suit. New suits constructive but nonforcing after 1-level overcall, natural one-round force after 2-level overcall. New suit jumps are forcing, cuebid usually good hand with support but sometimes a notrump probe or checking for fit in an unbid major. Jump cue-bid if below three of overcaller's suit is a mixed raise, four-card support & 8-10 HCP Jump overcalls--1C-2D is Michaels, otherwise natural/weak and could be utterly demented. 2NT by advancer is Ogust. Cuebids--1C-2C is natural, otherwise Michaels. Defense against 1NT--Landy, 2C= majors, double penalty, 2D/2H/2S=natural Doubles--Negative thru 4D, responsive thru 3D, maximal, card-showing, etc. Other--2NT limit raise or better over double. 2NT after overcall is a mixed raise in opener's suit. Modified Ripstra over gambling 3NT (4H/4S natural, 4C majors 6-4ish, 4D majors 5-5ish). Defensive Carding--4th best against notrump, 3rd and 5th against suits. A from AK against suits, otherwise standard honour leads. High encourages, low encourages. Frequent suit preference in the opponents' trumps or a suit they are running in notrump.
