Macintosh Help File - Getting Started with OKweb (Internet Explorer)
![]() |
If you wish to download the latest version of Internet Explorer, please do so now and restart your computer. If you are reading this file, you either are experiencing difficulty installing IE5 (Internet Explorer) or running OKweb on IE5 or are preparing for those possibilities. Let me begin by saying that IE 5 for the Macintosh is a fantastic Internet Browser, but has been poorly implemented. There are many common pitfalls with IE5 which you may likely encounter, which is why I am writing this document. All pitfalls aside, the benefits you will gain from using this browser, especially when running OKweb, far outweigh the trouble you may experience while setting it up. Upon installation of IE5, which I recommend installing to your Internet folder on your Macintosh Hard Drive, you will first need to increase the memory allocated to the program. In order to do this, follow these easy steps: 1. Locate your Internet Explorer 5 application. If you do not know where you keep your Internet Explorer 5 folder, you can find it by clicking on the desktop of your computer, and accessing the Find feature of your Macintosh. If you are using OS (Operating System) 8.0 or later, the Find feature is called Sherlock. To use find, choose from the toolbar at the top of your screen, FILE and then choose FIND. At the blinking cursor type Explorer and choose Search. Once you have located it, open the folder which contains it. There may be a shortcut on your desktop to IE5, this is not the application, it is merely an alias (Mac's name for a shortcut). An alias has italicized type. Here is an example: When you have the correct window open, it should look like this: or something like it. 2. Opening the Info Window & Allocating More Memory Once you have located the application, you are ready to give IE5 more memory. Be certain IE5 is NOT running, you cannot perform this operation while the application is running. To allocate more memory, you must first open the Information Window. To do this, single-click on the icon (double-clicking opens the application). Then press the Apple Key (also called the Command Key) on your keyboard, there is one on either side of the space bar. While you are holding the Apple Key, press the letter I. This should bring up a window that looks like this: If you hold your mouse over the arrows next to the words "General Information" on the Information Window, you will see an option called "Memory." Select Memory. The window should now look like this: Notice the white background behind the numbers for Minimum Size and Preferred Size. This means you can edit those numbers. If the backgrounds for these sections are not white, click here. A safe bet, is to set the numbers as above. Minimum Size: 10000 K and Preferred Size: 20000 K. This should ensure that OKweb has enough memory available to it to run smoothly. If you are still having problems running OKweb on IE5, click here.
